Voting With Your Wallet: Stop SOPA And Supporting It’s Supporters

SOPA goes overboard in protecting content creators and threatens the free Internet. Vote now using your wallet and your words.

If you don’t do business on the Internet in any way, shape or form or aren’t worried about having continued free access to information on the Internet don’t worry about reading this post. However if you enjoy not being told what you can and cannot see on the Internet along with not having government be heavy handed with companies alleged to be doing things they aren’t (the “innocent until proven guilty” thing) then please read and comment on this post.

Goodbye Social Media Automation, Hello Conversation

Online influence metrics change the use social media automation to follow people on Twitter, get likes on Facebook and views on YouTube.

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

Online influence metrics are changing the game again, and for the better.

Solid strategies – the ones that take time to take full effect and require a lot of thought and hard work – are going to win out over shortcuts.

I’ll say it plain – I’ve used tools to help me automate social media. I was under the false impression that I’d somehow miss out on information if I wasn’t following a lot of people, and that if I needed large numbers of “followers” and “fans” in order to help spread the word of Rob, meaning get clients.

I’ve recently found that impression to be patently false.

Is Your Inner Child Dead?

When a child approaches a new experience they see, feel, smell, sense and hear it. It's 100% immersive. Is your inner child still alive?

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

Let’s face it, thanks to all the rules and other crap we’ve layered upon it, social media has become a chore. How much do we share other people’s stuff compared to our own? What kinds of numbers do we need for ROI. What’s my Klout score look like…

Crap crap crap crap crap.

The entire point of all this “online stuff’” is to attract the people you want to work with to you so that you can see if a relationship can be formed.

Please Remove The Corporate Think From Your Small Business

Having a small business makes you more agile than your cumbersome competitors. Don't adopt the same mindset they do when planning ahead.

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

Having a small business gives you a very distinct advantage – size.

Because you are smaller, you can:

  • Make faster decisions

  • Implement those decisions faster (deciding and doing are two separate things)
One word can sum up that list and more I’m sure you can add to it – agile.
So why slow yourself down with corporate think?

More Evidence Social Media Impacts Your SEO

Not only is social media impacting your Google search results, now your keywords are being taken away too. What to do? Read the post and find out :)

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

In October (2011) I posted a conversation between myself and Dino where we spoke about how Google was deeply integrating social media (namely Google+) into their search results. And while some evidence was anecdotal today I have even more proof of this.

Here’s the bottom line: the searches you do and the people that you’re connected to directly impact (some might say limit) the information you have access to.

How Content Curation Changed Everything For Me

Content curation changes the way we use social media. Too much sharing can kill a community. Focus on quality and engagement, not quantity.

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

As an entrepreneur and marketer it’s imperative to take frequent looks at your strategy and see how well it’s working. If something needs improvement don’t wait – make the change and continue moving forward.

For me, this is one of those times.

To fully explain this change in strategy I need to show you how it all fits together. There are a few moving parts here:

  1. Content curation strategy

  2. General and content sharing strategy with Twitter and Triberr

  3. The new strategy

Is A Blog Really Meant For Engagement?

Blogs were created for publishing content not for engagement. Do we need to do something different with blogs or do we need a new platform?

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

Readers of this blog that have been here for the past few months know that I’ve changed the design more than a few times. And those changes aren’t going to stop.

The #1 reason I’ve changed the design so many times is that I’m trying to get more engagement from you the reader. And I’m not the only blogger out here looking for that. But what does engagement even mean, and can we get engagement from or with the readers of a blog?

Let’s talk about it today.

In order to answer the question of whether or not a blog is a good platform for engagement we first need to define the word.

  1. You have been blogging for a few months at least 2 times per week (not a solid requirement but it helps)

  2. You have people coming to your blog and reading your posts

Twitter Chats And Real-Time Marketing Chats For Business

Use branded, real-time marketing chats to grow the community around your business. Here's why Stanzr is better than standard Twitter chats.

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

Have you ever attended a Twitter chat? It’s a pretty interesting experience.

A number of years ago Chris Messina introduced the concept of hashtags (that little # symbol followed by a keyword) to Twitter in order to tag conversations and make them easier to find. Today this is something that’s such an embedded part of the Twitter ecosystem that we take them for granted. At least I do.

I’m not sure how long Twitter chats have been around for, but I heard about them at least a few years ago and never jumped in. During a conversation with Saul Fleischman and Jure Klepic it sounded like an interesting way to meet more people via Twitter, my favorite social network platform. Yes I just said that Twitter is my favorite. What’s yours?

How To Get More Done Than Anyone Else

When I see people giving advice I want to know what they're credentials are to be giving it and where they're coming from. Thanks to Harleena Singh I'm writing a series on time management. A huge thanks to everyone that added their book recommendations to yesterdays post, 54 Books Every Business Owner And Marketer Should Read. You all are awesome. Please keep the comments coming and you could win our completely random blog commenting contest. It’s the contest you never knew you were in. And speaking of comments…

I had a great conversation in the comments with Harleena Singh, a freelance writer who recently wrote an excellent post abou the role of grandparents in the family. We were chatting about finding the time to read books along with getting everything else done. I asked if she was interested in some productivity tips and she said sure. And thus the launch of this series. Thank you Harleena!

Today I want to kick off the series by talking about the environment I’m in and some background on me. Environment is hugely important for productivity. But environment isn’t only your current surroundings it’s everything. Also I want to be sure you all have the proper context that surrounds the advice I give. I’m not superman over here, but I’ve made some conscious choices in my life that impact how I work.

Finding Partners And Clients Using HitSniffer

There are many reasons to use real-time analytics, and not just because you have a data fetish like me. I mean... never mind.

We use HitSniffer for real-time analytics in addition to Google Analytics and ClickTale. One great way to use HitSniffer is to spot client and partnership opportunities.

Check out the following screenshot from HitSniffer:

Don’t mind the nav bar in the middle of the image – that’s  just there because my screenshot app can scroll faster than the bar can move down the page as it scrolls (which it does – very cool).

This is one of the reasons that I chose to use WordPress comments on this blog after trying Disqus and LiveFyre – full integration with HitSniffer.

7 Tips For Building Your Business With Podcasting

Jon provides 7 solid tips for using this highly viable model for gaining more business.

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

If you’re working with online content marketing to grow your business and you haven’t got a podcast yet, get one! Especially if you’re a consultant or solo entrepreneur.

Seriously, I can’t think of a better way to really connect with customers and prospects and show your skills as a thought-leader, coach, or service provider than with a podcast.

One year down the line after starting my own podcast it’s become the biggest source of lead generation for my business.

Sure, all the other “traditional” online strategies work: I run a business blog, I’m active on Twitter, post videos from time to time and try and keep up with Google+ and Facebook. It’s the podcast, though, that people seem to connect with as they tell me it helps them really get to know me.

  2. What they do once they get there

  3. Most importantly, what got them to convert to a lead

And for that you need a website analytics package. We use three on all of our sites and those of our clients:

Building A Strong Network From the Ground Up

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

When I first got started in social media, I didn’t know anyone. I knew I wanted to start a blog, but how was I going to get anyone to read it? At that time I had less than 200 followers on Twitter, and I was starting to figure out that I would not be able to build a successful blog by myself. I was going to need a network.

By creating a strong network, I have been able to grow my blog from nothing. I now have a vibrant community that has sprung up around me.I have built a great community at my own blog, and it is beyond what I could have hoped for. My blog continues to grow, and so do the opportunities around me.

How To Know If Your SEO Company Is Worth The Money

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com
It seems that every time I turn around I see a blog post about some shady search engine optimization (SEO) tactic being used by a company. In fact a marketing program I just signed up for suggested the use of a service that creates backlinks to your site by commenting on blogs and using your main keywords in the name field. Backlinks help your pages get ranked higher in the search engines and you’d think that having hundreds of comments pointing to your page would help with that. And you’d be right to a certain extent.

Thank You For Respectfully Disagreeing

How do you handle dissenting opinion on your site? There's only two options, and one isn't an option at all.

I’ve been watching the TV series Mad Men on DVD with my wife. We’re well into season 2 and it is awesome. While it’s very low on the advertising stuff, there is a lot of drama going on. It also appears to accurately depict how any non-white male was treated back in the 50′s – horrible. That part is not awesome, but realistic nonetheless. As they say, we’ve come a long way baby. And I’m very glad we have.

This Is Why You Keep Your Website And Blog Separate

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com
There’s a new little toolbar here on the Dempsey Marketing blog, and one you should definitely check out. It’s a tool from a company called Big Door, and it adds some gamification to the site. When To Talk About Yourself In Third Person

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com

On a business website there are times when you talk about yourself in third person and others when you don’t. To decide which way to go, answer the following question:

Are you building a company of one or many?

It isn’t a simple choice, and I’m sure you’ve heard advice on both sides of the fence. One person will tell you to be personable on your about page while another will say to keep your name out of it other than naming you an officer of the company. But let’s make it more fun and throw a monkey wrench into the works – regardless of which you choose, you can always change it later.

What The Do Not Track Feature On Firefox Means For Your Business

Affiliate and other online marketing will change once "do not track" legislation is put into place. Find out how to protect your business today.

Amplify’d from dempseymarketing.com
updated my web browser of choice (Firefox) the other day and it was running a bit slow. So I started poking around in the preferences and found this little check box under the privacy settings.

Since Firefox 4 the do not track feature has existed, but now it’s front and center and easily found by everyone. Why the change?

“Do Not Track” legislation has been on the table since 2010, however there are only a number of proposed bills with nothing written into law, yet. However browser makers aren’t taking any chances.

Lessons In Entrepreneurship: Robert Dempsey

What is the biggest lesson you've learned as an entrepreneur? Find out how Robert Dempsey, a 3-time business builder, answered the question and leave a lesson of your own.

As I was drafting this post I chose three big lessons that have helped me to succeed in my previous two businesses as well as my current. For some reason though I was uninspired to write, and put it down for a day. When I woke up this morning my brain had put two and two together, and I realized exactly what the most crucial factor of my success has been.
As you know I’m a recovered alcoholic with more than 11 years of sobriety. This gives me a different perspective on life. Every day not living a life of drunken hell is a blessing. Being able to provide opportunities for my daughter Palamee is a blessing. Being able to support my wife as much as she has supported me over the years is a blessing. I am a very lucky man. But luck is not what I’m talking about. After all luck is where opportunity meets preparation. Rather what I’m talking about is the thing that makes you prepared so that you can see opportunities when they arise.
